Why it Matters

In this era of Globalization, workers employed by the same companies are more interwoven than ever. While the companies establish global mandates and operate internationally without barriers, they ensure barriers of all types to keep workers ignorant of one another and even divided against each other. while they embody internationalism for themselves, to their respective workers, they preach nationalism.

Under these circumstances and with government apparatus in each country favorable to corporate interests and corrupted by their influence, the corporations are enabled in their schemes, of “whipsawing” the workers against each other. the corporations, especially in the former colonies of the imperial powers, can extract super profits while workers have to work long hours under difficult conditions to merely get by.

The last thing the companies want is for workers to “see” each other, understand each other, and collaborate together in Resistance to their schemes of exploitation and degradation. Where workers are advantaged, for example, able to organize into a union and act collectively, and have certain legal rights, it’s incumbent upon us to look out and fight on behalf of Workers who, by complicity of their own governments, deny workers the basic right to organize.

When it dawns on the companies that acts against their workers in one location will precipitate a reaction everywhere, they will think twice.

General Motors didn’t have their routine practice of firing workers injured in their Colmotores factory challenged until 2011 when the workers formed ASOTRECOL and fought back. Their struggle would not have sustained were it not for the combination of their valor and determination combined with the solidarity of workers, unions and solidarity organizations around the world. Their long sought victory will stand as an example for others to emulate and grow. That’s why it matters.
